Monster project
14 August 2002

Hi David -

Thank you for a great conversation! I look forward to proceeding with this project. I have a couple of things I urgently need to finish in August, but after that this is top priority. I may also be able to get things moving a bit right away.

Here are the references you asked for.

  1. The BBS reference on dreaming -- Reveonsuo, Antti (2000). The Reinterpretation of Dreams: An evolutionary hypothesis of the function of dreaming. Full text (local).

Revonsuo suggests in this special issue of Behavioral and Brain Sciences (with lots of commentaries) that dreams are designed to simulate threats.

See also Revonsuo, Antti (2000). Did ancestral humans dream for their lives? Behavioral and Brain Sciences 23. 6 (Dec):1063, and Revonsuo, Antti and Katja Valli (2000). Dreaming and Consciousness: Testing the Threat Simulation Theory of the Function of Dreaming. Psyche 6. 8. Full text (external).

  2. Berkeley contact: Phil Cowan, at the time the director of the Institute of Human Development (IHD), tel. (510) 642-7239 Web site, was very kind and helpful to Stephanie and me.

  3. The little girl I taught to eat apples off a picture is 23 months old -- quite a bit older than I realized. At the time she was captured on film chasing her dad, she was a year old.

  4. Susan Perry and Joe Manson study capuchins and are good friends of mine (including their infinitely charming daughter Kate, who is around 3). They're in Leipzig for the next few years, at the MPI, but they also go to their Costa Rica field site for several months every year.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,
Francis
