Boy Suffers Burns After Imitating MTV
13-Year-Old Remains In Critical Condition

A Torrington, Conn., teenager suffered severe burns after his friend set fire to his feet and legs.

Jason Lind, 13, was at Boston's Shriners Hospital Monday night.

NewsCenter 5's Steve Sbraccia reports that Lind and his friends were imitating a popular show on MTV.

The high-rated show is called "Jackass." It features a host who puts himself in terribly dangerous circumstances for laughs. The show airs with a warning about trying to copy its stunts.

Lind is in critical condition at Shriners Hospital, suffering from second-and third-degree burns.

Lind allowed his friends to throw gasoline on his legs and light it. Local fire officials couldn't believe what happened.

"Some of the other kids in the area said they were playing 'Jackass,'" Capt. Frank Hudak of the Torrington Fire Department said. "I asked them, 'What does that mean?' They said, 'MTV, Jackass.' I said, 'I don't know what you mean.' They said, 'You throw gas on a person and he goes on fire and then you put him out.' I said, 'You do this on purpose?'" Capt. Frank Hudak of the Torrington fire department said.

The teenagers were playing behind Lind's house recreating a segment that aired Friday when the host wrapped himself in steaks and lay on top of a barbecue grill while being doused with lighter fluid. Lind's father said that when he first saw the segment, he warned his son.

"I always explain to him about things you see on television. I told him that (the host has) a top notch (anti-fire) suit and he's got backup people if something goes wrong. They're going to shut him down immediately; you don't have that luxury," Eric Lind said.

"You see your son laying on an emergency room table with his skin falling off and he’s shaking like a leaf and he’s apologizing to you saying he messed up, it's an ugly scene," he said.

The 14-year-old who lit the gasoline that burned Lind was arrested and faces charges of reckless endangerment.

This is not the first time an MTV program has caused suffering. In 1993, a 2-year-old died after her 5-year-old brother became obsessed with the show "Beavis And Butthead." The boy set his family's trailer on fire. MTV responded by moving the show to a later time period.

Connecticut Sen. Joseph Lieberman publicly condemned MTV after the incident.

The "Jackass" show touts itself as an idiot cast engaged in stupid pranks. Both MTV's website and the show have disclaimers, but they are humorous in nature.

MTV has issued a statement wishing Lind a speedy recovery. MTV said that repeatedly during the show and on the website are warnings that the stunts shouldn't be attempted by anybody.
