The promise of Internet2
The Futurist 35. 4 (Jul/Aug 2001): 12-13

Abstract: Internet2 is comparable to stepping up from a cart path to an 8-lane superhighway, says Robert W. Tacker, director of information services at New Mexico Tech, one of 182 US universities teaming up with national research laboratories to develop the advanced network applications and technology of Internet2. The key to Internet2 is vastly increased broadband capacity, permitting information to move 600 times faster than is possible using phone lines. This will enable researchers to transmit huge volumes of data in minutes rather than hours or days. In addition to developing the networking and distribution systems, Internet2 working groups are devoted to developing various applications for the new technologies.
