Abstract

The chapter reviews the distinctions and similarities of currently prominent models of the functions of the human prefrontal cortex; illustrate the strengths and weaknesses of these models, their testability using conventional psychological and computational methods, and their face validity in light of 150 yrs of observation and testing of patients with damage to the human prefrontal cortex and more recent studies using functional neuroimaging methods; concludes with a relatively lengthy description of the framework I have adapted to investigate the functions of the human prefrontal cortex which stresses the importance of specifying a cognitive architecture.
