Sims Online project
Notes on Meeting/paper
Brendesha Tynes
Friday, February 6, 2004
Structure of paper will be divided into 3 sections:
- Cultural transmission-this process is really happening on the web, outside the game.
It is very inefficient. What exactly is it that keeps people from communicating with one
another, passing down information about the game?
- Cultural nature of the game-here we would discuss at least 4 pts:
- the basic structure
of the game (communication would probably come up here as well),
- simulation vs. reality,
- capitalism and
- morality.
Maybe we could also talk about motivational issues here.
- Culture and Identity-here we might discuss how the bulk of the avatars look (e.g. in
the science simulation for kids I talked about, most of the kids pick blonde, white
avatars), gender-swapping (this is discussed in Kelli?s journal), Mari's experience
entering the Sims as a person of color (is it similar or dissimilar to Jerry Kang's
experience where he was called a n*%$#@). I also think class issues should be discussed
here-the "haves-vs- havenots".
PMG notes:
- How to be a good submissive-dominant
- Normed roles- standard deviation off the norm in reg. soci.
- Thought game was open-surprised at how structured
- Hype vs-reality
